Botanical Garden - Mainau Island
365 days a year, rain or shine.
Mainau Island they are actually a swimming botanical garden in the South of Germany. Spring, summer, autumn and winter: Mainau Island is always worth a visit. Each season has something special for visitors besides the ocean of flowers in the park and gardens.
The 45 hectar Mainau Island lies just off the shores of Lake Constance the far south-west of Germany, close to Switzerland and Austria. The over 150 year old Arboretum with giant sequoias welcomes you to relax and enjoy nature seasons. Around a million tulips, rhododendrons, scented roses, perennials and colorful dahlias bloom in the park and gardens. Palms and citrus plants lend a Mediterranean flair to the island in summer. The Teutonic castle completed in 1746 and the castle church St. Marien are architectural highlights of the Baroque era and stand in close proximity to 15 metre tall palm trees.
In June they have a main peak of rose blooming. During that time our visitors can elect their favorite rose flowering in our Italian Rose Garden. You can also elect the most beautiful Mainau Queen of Roses.
In July they have a special roof garden. The roof top is the top of one of our restaurants. A main feature of this part of the park is the so-called hydrangea path which is lined with many varieties of this plant and has plenty of places to sit. And they are starting to show their blossoms these days. The hydrangea flower will last till early August.
Besides having wonderful flower beds that you can explore in August,, Mainau upholds its reputation as a ‘tropical island’ through special attractions. For example, the fountain arena with its terraces is the ideal spot for Mediterranean plants like the bird of paradise plant, bananas, palms, agaves, trumpet flowers, bougainvilleas, sweet chestnuts and also cypresses. Fuchsias are planted out in the lakeside garden for the summer. Some are over a hundred years old and up to four metres tall. In addition, the historic citrus collection can be viewed in the castle courtyard.
From September till early October our big dahlia display in the south of Mainau Island shows about 12.000 dahlias flowering in 250 varieties. This year our guests are pleased to vote for the 66th Mainau Queen of Dahlias. This election takes place since 1952. Visitors come across decorative, ball, pompom and cactus dahlias along the path with views of the shimmering Lake Constance.
