The annual illumination event highlights the fiery red leaves against the night sky, against the grandeur of the garden!
Rikugien Gardens is a classic example of daimyo teien, or feudal lord’s garden from the Edo Period (1603–1868). Built by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a chamberlain of the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the stroll garden with artificial hills and ponds is designed to reflect famous scenes from waka poetry. Designated as a cultural property, and in 1953 as a special place of scenic beauty, the garden is also one of the best spots in Tokyo for admiring the autumn foliage. The annual illumination event highlights the fiery red leaves against the night sky, against the grandeur of the garden. Note that parts of the garden are closed after 16:30 for the safety of the visitors.
