Wisteria Festival – Kameido Tenjin Shrine – 2018
Koto, Tokyo Japan
The Wisteria festival at the Kameido Tenjin is one of the lesser known flower festivals but equally as beautiful. The beautiful purple blooms come out near the end of April until early May. It is quite breathtaking, literally and figuratively with the lovely fragrance in the air.
There are 15 trellises full of wisteria of over 100+ varieties. It is also famous for the gorgeous red arching bridge. The wisteria were planted more than 300 years ago when the temple was built. Situated on an Edo period style temple grounds with a small lake complete with koi fish, turtles and ducks lounging under a canopy of wisteria. The bridge across the grounds provide a perfect backdrop for pictures. The reflection of the blossoms from the water is quite a sight to behold.
The blossoms are even more lovely at night when they are illuminated after sunset. Admission is free and can get quite busy during the weekends and holidays especially when they are at full bloom during golden week.
