Take a break, enjoy nature and relax: Mainau Island in Lake Constance offers lavish nature experiences each season. Spring signals the start into the Flower Year with thousands of tulips and other spring flowers; hundreds of rhododendrons and fragrant roses sweeten the summer. Over 12.000 colorful dahlias of all varieties make fall unforgettable, while an enchanting hush turns Mainau into a magical winter garden during the colder months. Throughout the whole year, Mainau Island invites its visitors to forget their hectic everyday life and turn their attention to the beauty and tranquility of nature.
Count Lennart Bernadotte transformed the once overgrown island and castle park in Lake Constance into a botanical garden during the 1950s, nowadays it is one of the main tourist attractions in the Lake Constance region, a place of relaxation and recreation as well as a source of inspiration for hobby gardeners. On 45 hectares the park reveals its diversity from the Italian Rose Garden with classical rambler roses, climbing roses and standard roses as well as artfully arranged rose pyramids to a wonderfully dynamic Herbaceous Garden with 16.000 perennials, grasses and other plants in harmonious garden scenes on 3.000 square meters.
Mainau Island stands out not only by means of its unique location in the midst of Lake Constance but also due to its various offers for visitors: It is home to one of the largest butterfly houses in Germany, large playgrounds and baroque Mainau Castle, where Count Lennart’s son Count Björn Bernadotte lives with his wife. A palm house with large Canary Island date palms adds to the experience, in spring it additionally hosts the only orchid show in Europe with over 3.000 plants on display that lasts up to six weeks in time.
